A child prodigy, Hugo Westphal was exhibiting his works in galleries next to nationally recognized artists by age fourteen. While still in his teens, he became a much sought after illustrator. In his early twenties Mr. Westphal traveled the world exhibiting his works.
From that period (late 1970s through 1998), Mr. Westphal worked as a freelance illustrator. Because of the demand for his renderings, Mr. Westphal spent long hours every day at his art table. The inordinate workload and attendant stress precipitated a stroke. After recuperation, Mr. Westphal gave up commercial art and resumed painting. An absolute master of soft colors and gentle themes, Mr. Westphal's paintings are esteemed for their simple stylistic beauty.
